What are flanges?

A flange, or pipe flange connection, is used to join pipes, hoses, or tubes that have an outside diameter of more than 178 mm (7 inches) when under very high pressure. Those that aid with exceptionally high pressures are called high pressure flanges.

What are flange types?

When two pipes or hoses need to be connected (and when connecting a hose to a pipe or a pipe to a hose), a pipe flange (also called connecting flange) is used to make the connection. Flanges are collars (or rims) that protrude from the pipe that enables it to be bolted or welded (flange weld) to the connecting pipe or hose. This helps ensure a leak-free connection between the two pipes or hoses. To guarantee a leak-free connection a gasket can be placed between the connecting flanges.

Where are flanges used?

When joining a pipe and a hose, or a pipe to a pipe or a hose to a pipe, flanges are bolted or screwed into the pipe or hose. The pipe or hose is then bolted to the flange on the other hose or pipe that needs to be joined. In the case where a secure seal is needed, a gasket is placed between the two bolted flanges, ensuring leak-free transportation of your high-pressure application.

Which materials are used to manufacture flanges?

Flanges are made from various materials depending on the application and environment. Carbon steel is commonly used for low to medium-pressure systems due to its cost-effectiveness. Stainless steel offers corrosion resistance, making it ideal for harsh environments. Alloy steel provides high strength at elevated temperatures. Ductile iron is durable, often used in municipal piping, while cast iron is suitable for low-pressure systems but is brittle. Plastic materials like PVC, CPVC, and HDPE are used in plumbing and chemical systems for their corrosion resistance. Copper flanges are preferred in water systems due to their resistance to corrosion, and titanium is used in high-performance applications for its strength and corrosion resistance.
